Electronic Design Tools

The advance of Modern Electronic Design Tools is used extensively. Ongoing tool updates ensure our design process benefits from new tool features and increase the designers' productivity. This is true for both the PCB Layout and Firmware design tasks. Test equipment updates are made as technology dictates, Bluetooth test equipment and BLE Protocol Analyzers. The core of Electronic Engineering evolves around PCB Layout and Firmware design. Altium Designer has been the PCB Layout tool of choice. IAR for Arm Cortex and MSP430 controllers is the code design favorite. MPLAB® X and CCS for Microchip

Micro Controllers

ARM (Advanced RISC Machines) is the choice for Embedded and computer processors. Arm Holdings licenses the architecture third-party companies, who build the physical devices.

Due to their low costs, low power consumption, and low heat generation, ARM processors are preferred for battery-powered devices and Embedded systems. ARM processors are also used for desktops and servers, smartphones, laptops, and tablet computers. Over 230 billion ARM chips were produced since 2003.

MSP430

Texas Instruments provides 16-bit MSP430™ microcontrollers (MCUs) as an affordable solution for all applications. The integrated precision analog enables designers to enhance system performance and lower system costs. Designers can find a cost-effective MCU within the broad MSP430 portfolio of over 2000 devices for virtually any need. Get started quickly and reduce time to market with simplified tools, software, and support.

Electronic Design Process

Code Design

Architecture decision of the family of Micro Processor to use. How much memory and if a RTOS is needed or not.

This is done early on during hardware design since IO and Peripherals are selected. IO pin assignment is locked in and feeds back to the PCB Layout pin assignments.

Debug and Test

Firmware testing actually starts early on, since small sections of the code are tested as the design takes shape. Complete Firmware testing begins once the Prototype PCBA is available. The debugger is the most valuable tool at this time. Functionality with the hardware and overall functionality of the Firmware modules are tested.

Release

Prototypes are presented to the customer early on for testing and feedback so modifications can be implemented. Code updates are made for ongoing testing by the customer and internally.

Field testing is vitally important to identify possible modifications and determine aspects that need to be addressed.
